San Pedro de Atacama

The driest town on Earth.

_________________________________

There is a lively energy to San Pedro de Atacama. It is one of the world's highest settlements, surrounded by The Atacama Desert, the driest climate on Earth, situated 7,900 feet above sea level. Originally a trading post for llama caravans traveling between the coast and the high Andes, the town has transformed into a thriving cultural epicenter in Northern Chile. The town itself is small and charming, with narrow cobblestone streets winding between colorful storefronts, quaint cafes, and bike rental shops.

Meanwhile, the landscape surrounding San Pedro de Atacama is otherworldly, with jagged mountains, towering sand dunes, and expansive salt flats reflecting the desert's colors and textures. Stargazing was a definite highlight, as the clear skies and lack of light pollution make it one of the best places in the world to see the stars. The area has several major astronomical observatories, including the ALMA telescope.
